About Us

MUGCR is a bell ringing society for students who are currently studying in Manchester. Anyone from any of the learning institutes in the Manchester area is welcome to be a member of the society. We are here to support existing ringers who are coming to Manchester to study, as well as to introduce new students to change ringing and to teach them how to ring.

Whether you’re curious about bell ringing, looking for a fun way to spend your time, or interested in learning a skill that you can take with you around the world, MUGCR is a welcoming community where everyone can get involved. Come and give it a try – you might be surprised by how addictive it can be!

Practices

Like most ringing societies, the backbone of what we do as a society is our weekly practice. We practice at Sacred Trinity church in Salford on Tuesday evenings, from 18:30 until 20:00. Our practices are for learning new skills, whether that be being taught how to handle a bell, learning to ring with others for the first time, practicing methods of various difficulty, or practicing how to conduct the rest of the band. We cater for any and all abilities, and our friendly Ringing Master and society officers will make you feel welcome.

If you’ve never heard of ringing before and want to learn, we can teach you! We have a learner’s practice which runs from 18:30 to 19:00 before the main practice, where we can teach you how to handle a bell and show you how ringing works. We have a number of people in the tower

It’s a law of nature that wherever there is ringing, there is almost certainly some drinking happening too. After our practices, we walk down to the King’s Arms in Salford to have a drink and to socialise. This is an entirely optional part of our activities and there is never any pressure to drink, but even if you don’t drink we’d encourage you to come along with us to get to know us better.

Further Ringing in Manchester

There is also lots more ringing at other towers in Manchester, and some of our members go to the local practices throughout the city. In particular, Holy Innocents church in Fallowfield is popular with our members because of how close it is to student accommodation, and Manchester Cathedral is useful for those looking to ring methods on higher numbers of bells.
